ACADEMIC PROFILE OF PROFESSOR SUNDAY PAUL BAKO

Burn on the 10th, March 1962, he completed his primary education in LEA Primary School, Tudun Wada, Kaduna State. from where he graduated in 1975 as a distinguished pupil and later proceeded to Sardauna Memorial College, Kaduna where he distinguished himself by winning several class awards. He graduated at the top of his class (second class upper division) in 1986 with B. Sc Botany from Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, and was retained by the University as an honorary graduate assistant, on the National Youth Service Corps scheme. During this service, he won the state Governor’s merit award for distinguished youth corps members; he gained automatic employment, and started his career in teaching and research as a graduate assistant in 1987.

He completed his M. Sc Botany in 1990 and subsequently bagged a Ph. D in 2000. He has additional qualifications in the areas of plant biotechnology and recombinant DNA techniques. His dedication and hard work earned him promotion to Professor of Botany in 2006, with research interest in environmental plant biology and biotechnology by the Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria.

A committed and distinguished academic he is still involved in teaching and research at undergraduate and postgraduate levels. He has supervised to completion over 80 undergraduate, and 50 Postgraduate students at M. Sc and Ph. D levels. He is also frequently involved in National and International commissioned projects. His research has led to the publication of over 90 research articles in National and International Journals.

Books and monographs. He is well travelled and has been to International conferences in Kenya, Libya, India, Egypt, Germany, China and the United States of America. He has won several International awards including The Ibaraki Kasumigaura (Japanese government) in 2005, and the Schweinfurt Foundation, Germany in 2009. He is still actively involved in research and participates in both National and international research projects.

He has held several positions of responsibility at Department, Faculty and University levels at Ahmedu Bello University, Zaria. He has been the Dean, Faculty of Science at the Taraba State University, Jalingo. He was the pioneer Director of Academic Planning, and also Dean of Student’s Affiaris Kwararafa University (Formerly, Wukari Jubilee University). He was also a member of the Governing Council of the University and has chaired several committees, including the University Management committee during which he acted in the absence of a substantive Vice-Chancellor.

He is on the editorial board of several national and international Journals and is also a member of the Board of Trustees of the Sardauna Memorial College Old Boys Association (SAMOBA) as well as the Governing Board of the Aleiyedeno Memorial Bible Institute.
